Inspiring with EdTech

In the heart of Guatemala, the echoes of tradition blend with the rhythm of progress, composing a unique song of a nation on the cusp of transformation. Historically, most schools in Guatemala were equipped with a maximum of five seemingly ancient, barely functioning computers. However, this narrative is changing, thanks to the unwavering efforts of Edify’s Guatemala Team. José Pérez, Education Technology Integration Officer, shares, “Through community sessions with school proprietors and leaders from all across Guatemala, we are opening up the conversation about education technology. Our goal is to help them understand where the world is heading with technology and how their schools can be a part of it.”

Trainings to Inspire

One of these trainings, titled ‘Is Technology Going to Shape Us, or Are We Shaping Technology for Our Future?’ starts with a TED Talk-like session. The team challenges the school leaders, asking, ‘What are you doing in your schools regarding technology, and what do you dream of doing? Throughout these training sessions, school proprietors have space to open up and share worries, hopes, and dreams for edtech in their schools. Following the theoretical discussions, the training moves into practical applications, providing hands-on experience with technology and creating a ripple effect of technological adoption across Guatemala.

Dare to Dream

One compelling exercise during the training involves asking teachers to dream big. José explains, “I tell them to imagine they have unlimited funds to bring edtech to their schools and write down what they would do. Naturally, most of them respond by writing down a modest number of computers and stopping there. Still, I encourage them to dream bigger and begin describing all of the possibilities of technology in the classroom. At this point, I can see their minds opening up to possibilities. I also explain to them the importance of planning for technology in the classroom and the work it takes to successfully acquire, implement, and maintain these tools.”

This forward-thinking approach has already produced fruit in several schools, one notable example being the family-run Colegio Cristiano Caleb. After attending our training, the school’s commitment to integrating technology has continued to deepen.

José shares, “They have taken out two loans with Edify specifically for technology upgrades, and it’s been amazing to see this school evolve from it.” The school, which began as a daycare and has since expanded into a middle and high school, could not have done it without technology adoption. José explains, “A computer lab is crucial for a school’s growth, especially if they want to grow into middle and high school. Parents see it as a must-have when deciding where to enroll middle and high school-aged learners.”

Through the dedication of individuals like José Pérez and the Edify Team in Guatemala, schools are becoming incubators of innovation, where dreams are encouraged and actively pursued.

José shares his inspiration: “When I visit schools like these, and I see every student engaged in typing skills, I realize that these schools are no longer just walking with us; they’re running. That’s our ultimate goal, and it’s a testament to the impact of Edify’s support.”

See how education is being transformed in Guatemala — and how you can be part of it.
