When most people think of accounting, they primarily think of spreadsheets, receipts, and financial reports. Before I began my internship at Edify, I viewed accounting similarly, since these made up the majority of what I learned in college. In my academic mindset, I saw it as an important business function that focuses on recording business transactions and accurately documenting financial data. Although these responsibilities are undoubtedly important, this summer has shown me that accounting can be much more. It can be a ministry of faithful stewardship, trust, and service that creates lasting opportunities for children and teachers around the world.

Working alongside Edify’s Accounting Team has given me a new perspective on how faithful financial stewardship can support Christ-centered education. Every report reviewed, every journal entry recorded, and every expense entered contributes to something that goes far beyond numbers in a spreadsheet. From my perspective, it was an experience that is difficult to fully put into words. Behind every financial transaction stands a school, a teacher, a student, and ultimately a life that is being transformed through an education rooted in faith.

Faithful Stewardship Makes Ministry Possible

Throughout my internship, I assisted with processing expense reports, supporting payroll, preparing journal entries, and participating in month-end accounting processes. At first glance, these tasks may seem ordinary. However, I have realized that every single one of them plays an important role in ensuring that Edify’s resources are managed wisely and responsibly.

Faithful stewardship is a biblical principle. God entrusts us with resources not simply so that we can possess them, but that we may faithfully manage them for His purposes and according to His will. Accurate financial reporting enables organizations like Edify to remain transparent and accountable while continuing to invest in schools that transform entire communities.

When financial information is reliable, leaders can make informed decisions that strengthen schools, support teachers, and provide better educational opportunities for children. Every detail matters because faithful stewardship builds trust, not only with donors and partners, but also within the communities that Edify serves.

Every Number Tells a Story

One of the most meaningful lessons I have learned this summer is that financial reports tell stories.

An expense report is not simply a list of numbers. It shows how resources have been invested to strengthen schools and how resources can change the lives of millions of people when they are used correctly. A payroll report represents the people whose work makes the mission of Edify possible in the first place. Journal entries document the financial activities that enable the organization to support schools around the world with integrity and excellence.

As an accounting student, my focus was on accuracy, organization, and technical skills. Those remain important, but I now recognize that these skills ultimately serve people. Accounting provides the clarity necessary for a ministry to grow sustainably and responsibly.

A Summer of Growth

In addition to developing my technical accounting skills, this internship has led me to see my future profession from a different perspective. I have learned that accounting is not only about balancing accounts or preparing reports, but rather an opportunity for me to serve others through faithful stewardship.

One of the things I appreciated most about Edify is that faith is naturally integrated into everyday work. Team meetings often begin with prayer, decisions are guided by biblical values, and every department shares the common goal of advancing Christ-centered education. Being part of an organization where professional excellence and faith go hand in hand has been both encouraging and inspiring. Edify has opened my eyes and shown me that I can truly connect my field of study with God’s will and my faith.

Looking Forward

As I prepare for the next chapter of my accounting career, I will take one important lesson with me: Every profession can be an opportunity to glorify God when it is carried out with integrity and a clear purpose.

This summer has reminded me that numbers are never just numbers. They represent people, opportunities, and the responsible use of the resources God has entrusted to us. Whether preparing reports, reviewing expenses, or supporting financial processes, even the smallest tasks can contribute to something much greater than ourselves.

I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from the Edify team and to witness how faithful stewardship contributes to making sustainable Christ-centered education possible around the world. This internship has not only expanded my knowledge of accounting but has also deepened my understanding that God can use every gift and every profession for His glory and for the good of others.
