In 2025, Edify stepped into Nigeria, a nation with the largest population in Africa and the sixth largest in the world. The team faces real challenges each day, from corruption to the practical realities of working in a new context. Yet, across this vast nation, progress is taking shape through training sessions rooted in Christ-centered values. Guided by prayer, the team moves forward as doors open, discerning each next step. Edify’s work in northern Nigeria currently extends only as far as Abuja, where stronger security allows for safe movement and coordination. Godwin Fiagbor, VP of West African Programs, explains, “We have had requests from areas with a history of persecution,” he says, “but we are not led to expand there, at least not for now.” With the support of the Association for Formidable Educational Development (AFED), Edify continues to prioritize the safety of its team while remaining attentive to where God is opening doors.

Building Trust

One of the most meaningful ways the team has strengthened relationships in Nigeria is through the personal connections made during face-to-face training sessions, which have been integral in empowering school proprietors with the resources they need to thrive. In six short months, Edify has already provided training for 2,500 low-fee independent schools. With each new session, school proprietors and teachers gather with excitement and anticipation. Godwin describes the rare momentum, “We have not seen such a passionate and energetic group of school proprietors, motivated to change the paradigm of their education, like in Nigeria,” he says. “They want to provide quality Christ-centered education that will transform the next generation.”

Some leaders arrive eager to grow in how they lead and teach. Many stay to learn how to thread Bible principles through everyday lessons. Afterward, a head teacher lingers to ask for prayer; another asks how to adapt a literacy activity for her youngest class. Confidence builds when a training confirms something they have sensed for years but had not yet named. All of it costs them time, travel, and energy, but they keep coming because it strengthens their leadership and classrooms. The day ends with tired smiles and full notebooks.

Anchored in Prayer

School proprietors have shared the growing pressure on Christ-centered schools, shaped by shifting local realities and competing influences. “The pressure is palpable,” Chioma says. “We need to spend more time praying before and during our work there, so our decisions and actions stay Spirit-led.” As Edify continues in Nigeria, each step forward is taken carefully, trusting God to guide the timing and keep classrooms anchored in a Christ-centered hope that will shape Nigeria’s next generation. May He keep opening the right doors, one faithful step at a time.
