Peru, with its stunning 1,500-mile stretch along the Pacific coast, is a land of diverse landscapes—from towering mountains to arid deserts. In the south lies Arequipa, the nation’s second-largest city, affectionately called the “Texas of Peru” for its distinct individuality and Western culture. This city, rich in history and strong in identity, became the backdrop for a new chapter of the Edify Peru team, where they would learn that together, with God’s leading, He would do “more than they could ask or imagine” Ephesians 3:20, (NIV).

The Call to Lead

For years, Alan Lopez, the Christ-centered Education Officer (CCEO) for Arequipa, guided the region. However, when Alan was called to another role at Edify, a leadership void emerged. Joel Cuadra, the Country Director of Peru, felt the weight of this responsibility. Despite receiving strong resumes, none brought him peace.

Tania’s decision was not just about stepping into a new role; it was about leaving behind the familiar and embracing the unknown. Moving from Lima, where she had grown up and lived with her parents, to Arequipa was a significant life change. Reflecting on this transition, Tania shared, “Several years ago, I desired to live in a different province of Peru. Lima is a big city, but I wanted to see blue skies, be among nature, and experience new things. Yet, the greatest peace came from my parents’ blessing. Their permission and prayers released me to move forward.” Yet leaving Lima also meant leaving behind the schools and communities she had served. In a testament to God’s provision, her team in Lima stepped up, ensuring each school was continually cared for even after she left.

Embracing a New Challenge

In Arequipa, Tania found herself in a region where trust had to be earned. “Hello, my name is Tania, and I do not sell books,” she would often begin, addressing school proprietors skeptical of her intentions. “Sometimes in Arequipa, they don’t trust you easily, so you need to take more time for the relationship. They often think we are selling books… but once they realize Edify is offering sincere help, they cannot believe what they hear and want to work with us immediately.”

Tania’s move to Arequipa opened doors not only in the city but in other southern regions of Peru. On a recent trip to IEP Emanuel-Tacna, a school near the Chilean border, Tania met a pastor who served as the school’s director, teacher, and even janitor. Thanks to Tania’s willingness to answer God’s call, Edify supported this pastor, equipping him with the tools needed to run his school with excellence. “I’ve seen how God is working in the school and this man… A school in the middle of nowhere that we could never have reached otherwise,” Tania shared.

Readiness

Reflecting, Tania’s story is a powerful reminder that God prepares us for the opportunities He places before us, even when we least expect them. Yet, because she had remained in tune with God’s voice, she was ready when the call came. When asked, “A year ago, could you have imagined being where you are today?” Tania smiled ear to ear, replying, “I have this sense of purpose that I am doing exactly what I am supposed to do.”

This Thanksgiving, the Edify Peru team is grateful for how they’ve united to transform lives and continue fostering faith and leadership across Peru. As we reflect on the year, we encourage you to pause, give thanks, and recognize God’s faithfulness in the unexpected moments that have shaped your journey.
